Since being in college I have taken multiple art history courses. After every art history course I have a strong urge to go to that particular country I studied about and see everything I learned first hand. When I studied Italian Renaissance art last semester I wanted to go to Italy. I wanted to go to Florence and look at all the architecture and art made by Donatello, Raphael and Ghiberti.I want to go to the Vatican to see the Sistine Chapel and admire the work of Michelangelo, and besides the art just take in the sights and beautiful cities like Venice. I didn’t think there was anywhere other then Italy I would want to go at that moment. I was WRONG! This past month I took a course in Greek Art HIstory. All my life I have had a strange fascination with ancient Greece. I love the Mythology and the history, the literature like The Odyssey and The Illiad, and now I love the art. What is great about Greek art is that it contains the mythology and the history of Greece, so its just like one big combination of everything I love learning about. In the last month I have probably bought 20-25 books anything Greek. I got books on Alexander the Great, Greek art, battles and wars in Greece, books on the Spartans, ancient Greek mythology and Greek literature just to name a few. I have set a new goal for myself. I am going to educate myself on everything Greek. I want to learn the history, the culture, the art, the whole shebang! While I’m in school I will pick up another concentration in History and try to take as many classes that cover this subject. On top of learning as much as I can about Greece I will also have to brush up on my knowledge of Ancient Rome and Egypt. These three subjects all relate to each other in terms of art, architecture and history, so in order to learn more about Greece I have to study the other too as well. I’m hoping that with the knowledge I gain from this study I will be able to interpret it through my art. Who knows, maybe I will stay there for 6 months or a year and work on a book on my experience through my photography and art. I do not know what I will do and I might not even have the change to do it soon, but I will do something, that I know for sure. And don’t think I have forgotten about Italy. I will travel to Italy as well, after all it is just next door to Greece. But the interest I have with Italy does not compare to my love of Greece.
